On Friday 7 October 2022 we were delighted to partner with the WS Society on the Sports Law Conference, which was held at the Signet Library, on Edinburgh’s historic Royal Mile.
Attendees were able to hear from our own Paolo Lombardi, who in addition to Chair duties on the day also hosted the opening session ‘In Conversation with Patrick Stewart’. Patrick, General Counsel of Manchester United Football Club, was followed by Jamie Kerr WS (Partner, Burness Paull) who gave an overview of immigration issues facing sports law practitioners post-Brexit.
Gillian Treasurer (Head of Legal, Scottish Rugby Union) gave attendees a brilliant insight into life at a governing body and Chris Anderson, Former Head of the DCMS Fan-Led Governance Review provided an overview of the Crouch Report, which he authored, the process involved and its recommendations.
Finally, Patrick, Gillian and Chris were joined by Neeraj Thomas (Partner, CMS) and Sean Cottrell (Founder and CEO of Law in Sport) for an overview of some current issues for sports lawyers to be aware of.
We were also delighted to be joined by Razzak Mirjan, in his capacity as founder of the wonderful charity Beder. In advance of World Mental Health Day, on Monday 10 October, Razzak spoke of the wonderful work Beder is involved with to softly raise awareness and start conversations around the subjects of mental health and suicide prevention. More information on Beder and the work they do is available here.
Thank you to Anna Bennett WS and all at the WS Society for their collaboration on this fantastic conference. It was great to hear such positive feedback after the event and we are particularly grateful to Stefania Sossi for the pictures accompanying this post.
